Heat Up Your Health! News for the Sauna Lifestyle
March 2005

Last month we had a little fun with our newsletter about sweat. This month, with the lingering effects of winter wearing on us, we turn our attention to the very serious topic of pain relief.

While you may not be entirely aware of it, you know someone who lives with pain every day - and it's no mystery to them how chronic pain continually diminishes the quality of their life. It is ever-present and undermines everything they do.

Chronic pain not only affects one on the physical level, but psychologically as well. It leads to stress and researchers have found a link to our stress and the aging of our cells and, potentially, the development of disease.

In addition to creating awareness about the difficulty faced by those who deal with chronic pain, we also offer some information on alternative treatments. Before the advent of international multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies, care givers relied on the natural healing properties of herbs as effective medicine for pain relief and the physical and emotional disturbances that often accompany it.

We're also sharing a little about the movement toward heat therapy for cancer patients, commonly referred to as hyperthermia. Not only does this therapy attack the cancer cells, it is also a crucial tool in the management of pain.

We discovered a study that found sunlight helps patients heal faster after surgery. We also share with you some alternative approaches to treatment of osteoarthritis and how far infrared therapy can help in the management of pain.

As always, we are happy to share this for your information and strongly recommend that you check with your physician before pursuing any method of treatment.

Until next month,

Warmest Regards!

  • Sunlight Lowers Need for Painkillers After Surgery

Increasing the amount of sunlight in a patient's hospital room reduces their "perception of pain and their need for analgesic medication," according to a new report.

    Herbs for Pain

Since pain is such a common human affliction, societies around the globe have experimented with various plants for pain throughout history, and many herbs have been found to have analgesic, sedative and anti-inflammatory effects, all of which help to reduce pain.

    Healing Cancer with Heat

For many patients, battling cancer has also meant fighting constant pain, or relying on strong narcotics like Demerol or morphine derivatives. Hyperthermia is an excellent alternative to the use of these addictive drugs.

    Psychological Stress and Disease

Increasing scientific evidence suggests that prolonged psychological stress takes its toll on the body. Scientists report that psychological stress may exact its toll, at least in part, by affecting molecules believed to play a key role in cellular aging and, possibly, disease development.

    Osteoarthritis Alternative Treatments

There is no major disease as misunderstood by doctors as arthritis. And there is no major disease as simple to treat. On this subject, the gulf between the traditional medicine of your neighborhood doctor and the health-oriented medicine of progressive doctors is as wide as the ocean.

    Far Infrared Therapy and Pain

Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. In one dental study, repeated heat applications led finally to abolishment of the whole nerve response responsible for pain arising from dental pulp.

Chronic Pain Can Steal Sleep, Work and Pleasure

Chronic pain can result from injuries that never fully healed, unsuccessful surgeries, lower back problems, systemic conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia, or a variety of diseases. Chronic pain interferes with work, restricts everyday activities, and can even take the joy out of life.
