Heat Up Your Health! News for the Sauna Lifestyle
September 2005

Is it just us, or are you sitting there wondering - "Where did the summer go"? For many, (ourselves included) September is a time for setting goals, creating schedules and generally getting our laid back summer lives back into some semblance of structure. Hey, we even gave you an extra week to get back into the swing of things before sending out our September news! :-)

In past newsletters, we've explored topics such as skin, weight loss, detoxification and pain relief; but what is it we're all really looking for?? Bottom line - it is to get healthy, stay healthy and live as long as possible (while still feeling good). After all, who cares if you live to be 100, but spend the last 20 years drooling into your tapioca? So this month, we're going to look at Aging and Longevity.

On a personal note, I have two grandmothers still alive. One is 95 and still lives at home alone. She crochets, plays shuffleboard in a league, has a busy social life and still completes the daily crossword in the paper. The other is 93, has had both of her knees replaced, has a spine that is virtually fused with arthritis and is plagued with seizures that leave her weak for days. Both were born and raised on farms. Both come from families where longevity is a given. The question then becomes - Why is one aging so much more gracefully than the other?

In this issue, we'll shatter the aging myths, look at how stress, sugar and folic acid all play key roles in how quickly your body ages as well as have some fun looking at the Chinese recipe for long life - wine and cannabis!

Great health and longevity are proving to be a lifestyle choice - not simply relegated to genetics. Choose to make your life a long and healthy one.

Until next month,

Warmest Regards!

  • Shattering The Myths Of Old Age

A 10-year study by the MacArthur Foundation to find out how people can preserve and enhance their mental and physical health in later life has published their findings. The research shows that the influence of genetics shrinks proportionately as we get older, while social and physical habits become more important to physical and mental health.

    Stress Speeds Aging

Scientists have identified the first direct link between stress and aging, a finding that could explain why intense, long-term emotional strain can make people get sick and grow old before their time.
Chronic stress appears to hasten the shriveling of the tips of the bundles of genes inside cells, which shortens their life span and speeds the body's deterioration.

Human Growth Hormone - Miracle or Quackery?

The average person thinks of the damage of aging as an inevitable process of wear and tear. However, if wear and tear were the primary cause of aging in humans, a 60 year-old should have only twice the signs of aging as a 30 year-old. So why do most 30 year-olds show little effects of aging, while the effects of aging are so obvious in a 60 year-old person?

Centarians - What's The Secret To Seeing 100?

Living to 100 may well represent the ultimate game of "Survivor." Centenarians, as they're known, were alive at the turn of the last century, when airplanes, computers, and space travel were pure science fantasies. And yet, a century later, these centenarians are blazing new trails in science every day.

    Foods That Fight Alzheimer's

We are in the midst of an Alzheimer's epidemic and if you get this miracle nutrient from foods, not supplements you can preserve your mental clarity. This 10-year study just published in July 2005 found that older people who eat food containing high amounts of folate, which is found in many leafy green vegetables and fruits, can cut their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by more than half.

Want To Live Long? Stop Eating So Much!

Award-winning research shows that elderly mice put on a low-calorie diet lived for around six months longer than a typical life span of two years. In human terms - this could mean an extra 30 years of quality living.

Like Sugar? It's Making You OLDER - FASTER !!

Blocking insulin's action inside a few specific cells and the entire body stays healthier longer. Scientists previously thought insulin triggered other hormones to achieve this effect, but this research team found that insulin regulates its own production and that it directly regulates tissue aging. The principle: keep insulin levels low and cells are stronger, staving off infection and age-related diseases such as cancer, dementia and stroke.
