Heat Up Your Health! News for the Sauna Lifestyle
October 2005

Fall is in the air, you can smell it! Sporadic patches of colour dotting the landscape, pumpkins appearing in doorways and Halloween decorations and sweets crowding the stores. Yes, sugar season is upon us. It starts with Thanksgiving and ends at New Years at which point we all make resolutions to clean up our act and get "back on the program".

It is no mystery that November marks the beginning of cold and flu season. Think about the virtual attack your immune system is under when indulging in all those sugary snacks. We don't stand a chance when exposed to a virus - our bodies are ripe for the picking.

So what to eat?? What NOT to eat?? Part of the healthy sauna lifestyle is eating foods that promote well being. Sure, the saunas can detoxify your body, but you really need to eat healthy in order to make it easier for your immune system to respond. So this month, we've scoured the web to find you the most current information about foods...with some surprising (and in some cases frightening) news.

In this issue, we'll tell you about a "supersized lawsuit" that's going to put new warning labels on french fries and potato chips, how coffee is the antioxidant of choice for most adults, GMO foods to avoid, the deadly effects of Aspartame and how to stay super-healthy with juicing and raw foods.

Love yourself. Eat well, be happy and enjoy this wonderful season that celebrates abundance!

Until next month,

Warmest Regards!

  • Coffee - A Top Source of Antioxidants

Antioxidants, which are thought to help battle cancer and provide other health benefits, are abundant in grains and many other fruits and vegetables. Surprisingly, in a new study from the University of Scranton, PA researchers found that the average adult consumes 1,299 milligrams of antioxidants daily from coffee. The closest competitor was tea at 294 milligrams. Rounding out the top five sources were bananas, 76 milligrams; dry beans, 72 milligrams; and corn, 48 milligrams. So go ahead and enjoy that coffee; in small amounts, it's actually good for you!

Soy is NOT a Health Food

We have long been lead to believe that soy is a healthy food. Soy milk, textured "meat substitute", ice creams and cheeses are everywhere. New research however is finding that soy is anything but healthy. It contains known carcinogens and is now linked to everything from irritable bowel syndrome to impaired fetal brain development to thyroid problems in children. So why is it so widely accepted? Learn the whole truth about soy.

    Genetically Modified Foods List

Genetically modified foods did not exist prior to 1995. Today, 70% of processed foods have genetically modified foods in them. There have been NO STUDIES done with humans to show what happens when genetically modified foods are consumed but investigators have found that rats fed genetically modified potatoes had an increased thickening in the lining of their stomach and intestine and a weakening of their immune system. Play it safe and avoid processed foods - here's a complete list of both GMO and NON-GMO foods for the healthy & wise - you'll be surprised.

    Aspartame - Sweet and Deadly

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. It is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure and is in most processed foods, all chewing gums and diet sodas. It is highly addictive and is known to cause over 90 different illnesses and diseases. A hard and fast rule in our house is "avoid Aspartame at all costs". Here's why.

    Protein Boosts Exercise Effect

Ready for some good news? Everyone knows that a good weight-loss program combines diet and exercise, but a new University of Illinois study reports that exercise is much more effective when it's coupled with a protein-rich diet.

    Juicing - Instant Nutrition

Fresh fruit & vegetable juices have been shown to possess remarkable health-promoting properties and has been used for centuries by naturopaths to help treat a range of ailments. Freshly squeezed juices contain naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and enzymes which are far better than synthetic tablets. The nutrients are easily absorbed into the bloodstream and within ten minutes they are nourishing your body's cells.

California Sues French Fry & Potato Chip Companies

FAST-FOOD chains including McDonald's, Burger King and KFC are to be sued by the state of California for not warning consumers about a potentially cancer-causing agent produced when potatoes are deep fried. The lawsuit is the first of its kind in the world and could result in health warnings on French fries, or at least on the walls of restaurants.
